"I particularly recommend the thorough reading and appreciation of the first chapter. Those who have sufficient experience will appreciate and endorse the many points which are made upon the early stages of ownership and the requirements of breeding."

"A practical no-nonsense approach to dog breeding is the prime focus of this very readable book. Dr. Grossman writes for the novice and advanced breeder as well, spotlighting possible pitfalls and providing guidance...In short, everything you wanted to know about breeding a winner but were afraid to ask."

"Dr. Grossman doesn't write mundanely. It is certainly one of this and the past decade's most important books. He presents facts in an exciting light as in his discussion of Mendel's work in applying genetics to dog breeding."

"Dr. Grossman combines the artistic principle of 'having an eye for a dog' with sound scientific principles of breeding and genetics which will prove to be of immense value to both the first time breeder and the successful breeder of many champions."

"The development of the breed is explained and its relationship to the Sussex, Field and English Cocker breeds is defined. The photos are charming. The section on Form vs function is worth the price of the book. This is one book you shouldn't overlook." - Dog Fancy Magazine

"The range of information is immense. A facinating book with a different approach and by today's standards good value for the money. For Cocker enthusiasts this is an encylopedia of the breed which would be difficult to parallel." - Our Dogs Magazine of England

"Dr. Grossman has written what must be the final work on the American Cocker Spaniel. The author has written with clarity, and a tuch of humor sparkles in his style. Every owner of a Cocker will want to own this excellent book as a valuable reference and as a real source of practical information." - American Kennel Club Gazette

"This is a must get. Especially for anyone truly interested in breeding cockers for show, color, and comformation. It has an excellent chapter in breeding for coat color and genetics. The book is written well with a touch of humor from a man who has much experience with the cockers; not someone who wants to publish a book about the breed. He has many references to other reading material, as well as a very thorough history of the breed, including many pedigrees on these dogs. If you only get one book on the Cocker Spaniel--this is THE ONE to get." - A reader

The author was very knowledgeable and easy to understand even though also very in depth." - R.T. Jones (Cody, Wyoming)

"This is an excellent book for those that are thinking about showing their dogs and are wondering what is involved. Not only does the author explain what steps he took to get from novice owner to dog show judge, but also any questions that he had (and the answers he was given) and his own thoughts that he had along the way. For example, I finally figured out what a special was! This format is quite effective at helping the novice who may have the same type of questions that he had when he was starting out. Though he emphasizes one breed in particular, the information is equally applicable to all breeds. Since it is a generalized book on the subject, he has left out a lot of details that are involved with showing and breeding dogs, of which many can be negative and heartbreaking. However, these details are available elsewhere once one decides to get serious about showing. As a primer for learning about dog shows, this is an excellent book."
